Africa has opened its first Olympic Games. On 31 October, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games open at the 55,000-capacity Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio. IOC President Kirsty Coventry was in attendance, and more than 1,000 performers took part in the ceremony. Two Senegalese teenagers, fencer Abdourahmane Marième Sy and judoka Aïcha Diop, lit the cauldron as the Olympic flame ended its journey on African soil for the first time. Running until 13 November, the Games bring around 2,655 athletes aged 14 to 17 from 204 national teams, competing in 25 sports and 153 medal events across three hubs: Dakar, Diamniadio and the beach resort of Saly.

It is also the first Youth Olympics with full gender parity and the first to include a Refugee Olympic Team, whose six athletes compete in athletics, judo and taekwondo. Baseball5 and wushu taolu make their Youth Olympic debuts, while the host nation’s hopes rest largely on 3x3 basketball player Néné Sira Diallo and beach wrestler Ablaye Diouf. The Games were originally awarded for 2022 before being pushed back to 2026.

## 🧭 Guide: African Horror and Supernatural Films for Your Watchlist

Don't pick up money you find on the road. Don't answer when someone calls your name in the dark. And if you hear heels on the dormitory corridor after lights out, stay in bed. Those warnings came from grandmothers, boarding-house seniors and extended family gatherings, and each one carried a real fear: of greed, of the sea, of whatever comes to collect what it's owed.

Over the past decade, African filmmakers have turned those warnings into some of the most original genre cinema anywhere. This list **gathers 22 of them**, from the VHS money-ritual classic that built Nollywood to festival favourites and streaming originals. Some will make you scream. Others will just make you sleep with the light on.
