Welcome to Vol 157 of the Spread!
Hello and welcome back to the Spread, your weekly edit of all the best stories and global news about Africans shaping mainstream culture.
Last week was our anniversary issue! (still can’t believe it’s been three years). Thank you for reading, sharing, and being part of this little corner of culture with us.
It’s also been a pretty huge month for African art. The 1-54 African Art Fair and the Nigerian Modernism exhibition at the Tate have been stealing global attention, Dada Gallery is finally planting roots in Lagos, Anthony Azekwoh has everyone obsessed with his mysterious new project, and artists like Sungi Mlengeya are redefining what it means to see and paint Black womanhood.
Oh, and if you’re in London, Orry Shenjobi’s “A Wà Ǹbẹ̀” exhibition at The Africa Centre is still on. Take your friends (and enemies) and go see it. You’ll thank me later.
Before I go, we’re still exploring how communal traditions shape our identity, and we’d love to hear what home and belonging mean to you.
That’s all from me for now, cheers to a new week!
