Welcome to Vol 154 of the Spread!

Hello and welcome back to the Spread, your weekly edit of all the best stories and global news about Africans shaping mainstream culture.

Happy New Month! “but it’s not yet…” Yes yes I know it’s not officially October yet, but I wanted to be the first to wish you a little early joy; consider it an early gift.

And speaking of early gifts, October is shaping up to be a big one for us at Marmalade. Last month we had a blast celebrating World Photography Day, and this month we’re turning the spotlight on something even closer to our hearts: Black History Month.

You know that saying, home is where the heart is? Well for us, home is where the culture is, and throughout October, we’re celebrating the traditions, stories, and communities that shape who we are.

We’re kicking things off with something truly special: a London exhibition by Orry Shenjobi, called A Wa N Be, bringing Owambe culture to life and reimagining community through tradition. Plus, we’ll be diving into how our traditions shape our identity, and make us feel at home wherever we are.

So buckle up my loves, I won’t give any more away because surprises (and torturous suspense) are half the fun *insert evil laugh*, but I will say for now; mark your calendars and prepare to be very, very impressed.

Mary x,
