Welcome to Vol 199 of the Spread!

Hello and welcome back to the Spread, your weekly edit of all the best stories and global news about Africans shaping mainstream culture.

My weekend went okay. Ayra Starr got me through it with this album. Some of the things I’m currently processing: The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives has a film adaptation premiering at TIFF, and as a big fan of the book, I genuinely don't know what to expect. I watched the trailer, and I'm holding my thoughts very loosely. Will I be one of those "the book is better" people? Will I love it? I haven't decided yet. I wonder if you have.

On a different note, we've been absolutely delighted by the reception to our guide on nature and wildlife photographers from Africa. It feels important to us to spotlight work that sits at the intersection of artistry and environmentalism. This kind of photography doesn't just document the natural world; it makes you care about it. Go have a look if you haven't yet.

Now, onto this week's stories.
