Hello and welcome back to the Spread, your weekly edit of all the best stories and global news about Africans shaping mainstream culture.

I spent most of my weekend ill, which wasn't the plan at all, but I did manage to finish Abi Daré's And So I Roar (the book I recommended last week), seeing as I couldn't really keep my eyes on screens. Genuinely wonderful read.

But whether you're online or not, there's no escaping it: all anyone is talking about is the World Cup. Two African countries have played so far — South Africa and Morocco — and while I won't pretend to be the biggest football person, I love everything that comes with it. The energy, the community, the fashion. Speaking of which, did you see DR Congo's arrival suits? Absolute cinema. I couldn't stop staring.
